ITS TIME FOR A PARADIGM SHIFT

We need to shift from a weight centric paradigm to a weight inclusive paradigm where we focus on behavioral change and holistic health not simply weight. Weight is not a determinant of health. Associating weight with health is a determinant of weight bias

Many folks are uncomfortable with a weight inclusive perspective as it is not consistent with the dominant message. Barker (1993) calls this the ‘paradigm effect’. This speaks to those in the dominant paradigm (weight centric) rejecting alternative paradigms. Those who ascribe to a weight centric approach will not accept evidence that does not fit into the paradigm they uphold. Due to the prominence of the dominant paradigm, other possibilities such as a weight inclusive paradigm get dismissed and discredited.

This explains how despite overwhelming research showing that it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to maintain medium to long term weight loss and the risks of weight cycling negatively impact health outcomes, shifting to a weight inclusive paradigm threatens the dominant message. Continuing to promote intentional weight loss methods is equivical to pouring gasoline on a fire.

•Promoting weight loss is not the answer to weight stigma

•Promoting weight loss is not the answer to body acceptance

• Promoting weight loss is not the answer to health and well being

•Promoting weight loss is NOT THE ANSWER.

THE ANSWER IS SHIFTING PARADIGMS to a weight inclusive approach. Each of us can be a part of this by CHALLENGING the dominant weight centric paradigm.
