HEY COLLEGE STUDENTS: final exam guide

Its that time of year. Classes have come to  an end, you’re eagerly awaiting a break from school, and the one thing that stands between you and freedom….FINAL EXAMS 😱. For the majority of students, this is a highly stressful time. Here are some tips to help you manage your stress:

  1. Sleeeeeeeep! DO NOT SACRIFICE YOUR SLEEP. Being sleep deprived during final exams is a recipe for disaster. Ensure that each night you are getting 7-9 hours of sleep. This will reduce your body’s stress response and aid your brain in consolidating all the information you’ve been studying. A’s are not the most important letter during exam time….Z’s are!
  2. Nourish yourself! Your body and brain are exerting tremendous energy while you’re studying. In order to maintain your stamina and focus, be sure to nourish yourself adequately and sufficiently. I recommend using meal times as an opportunity to connect with friends due to studying being isolating in nature.
  3. TAKE BREAKS. Numerous research studies confirm that taking breaks leads to improved productivity and efficiency. Most studies indicate that breaks are beneficial after 45-60 minutes of sustained attention, but base this on what works best for you. Consider taking a break of at least 10 minutes. Also of note, not all breaks are created equal. Studies recommend using breaks to: move (go for a light walk, stretch), meditate (lowers stress and anxiety; induces state of calmness), power nap (10-20 minutes)
  4. When possible, change scenery. Consider stepping outside and getting some fresh air!
  5. Make efforts to connect with friends to decrease feelings of isolation. As mentioned above, meals and break times are a prime opportunity to laugh, smile, and commiserate with one another!
  6. Be kind to yourself. Encourage yourself to keep going and that you can do this.
